Here's a little rhyme to help you remember...

Rhythm Helps Your Two Hips Move

When soldiers march behind a band, their footsteps are absolutely regular and even. The music helps to keep them together. Sometimes a drum will be struck with every footstep. We say that music has a steady beat or pulse and that the soldiers are marching in time to the music.

Listening and Dictation

Dictation is being able to write down what you hear. Listen to the beats and rhythms in the following examples and put one or two circles or dots in the correct squares.

The Rhythm Clock

In pairs...

One of you must clap out a rhythm from the clock opposite.

The other person has to say what time it is.

To do this, look at the clock and match up the rhythm you hear with a time.

Take it in turns so you both have a go.

RHYTHm games

Set a metronome beat going. The Tea Coffee Lemonade game is like musical pass-the-parcel. Each student has to clap the correct rhythm in the sequence. A rest MUST remain silent. If they clap the wrong rhythm, clap out of time, or clap in a rest they're out! Any student who is out becomes an umpire of the game and has to determine if the others are playing fairly. The tempo can be adjusted to suit the ability of the class. You'll finally get down to one winner.

Drink rhythms in a pop melody

The rhythms we've learnt about are used in all types of music. Ella Henderson's track 'Ghost' uses TEA COFFEE and REST.

The note names are above the music. Have a go at playing this melody.

The task is broken down into Blue, Purple and Pink tasks.
